Sumatra wrapper is named for the Indonesian island where the seed comes from. Indonesian Sumatra leaf is still grown and used. Much of the Sumatra wrapper on today's premium cigars, however, is Sumatra-seed tobacco grown in Ecuador and sold as "Ecuador Sumatra."
As with other seed names, "Sumatra" tells you the plant variety, and the country tells you where it was grown. An Indonesian Sumatra wrapper and an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper are not the same leaf. Sumatra wrapper can show some tooth. See Ecuadorian wrapper and wrapper types and colors.
