Also called: Pan-American Convention, General Inter-American Convention

The General Inter-American Convention for Trade Mark and Commercial Protection (1929) is a trademark treaty among countries of the Americas. Both the United States and Cuba are parties. Under Article 8, the owner of a mark protected in one member country can seek cancellation of a later registration of the same mark in another member country if it proves earlier home-country protection and that the later applicant knew of the mark's use. The TTAB relied on Article 8 when it cancelled General Cigar's COHIBA registrations in 2022. See Cohiba vs. Cohiba.
