Burn describes how a cigar burns. With an even burn, the burning edge moves in a straight line around the cigar, behind the ash. Canoeing means one side burns faster than the other. Tunneling means the center burns away and leaves a tube of wrapper. A cigar that goes out every few minutes also has a burn problem; it is not only the smoker’s fault.
Both the leaves and the construction affect the burn. Volado helps the cigar stay lit, while Ligero burns more slowly. A binder that does not burn well slows down the rest of the bunch. A cigar stored in a humidor with high humidity will burn poorly, and a dry cigar will burn too fast.
Touching up the burn with a torch now and then is normal. If you have to correct it constantly, the cigar was probably made or stored badly. See draw for the related problem of airflow.
