A draw-testing machine measures how much resistance a cigar bunch offers to air. The bunch is placed in the machine, air is pulled through it, and a gauge shows the reading. Bunches that read too tight (a plug) or too loose are rejected. Factories usually test after the bunch comes out of the mold and before the wrapper is applied, so they don't waste wrapper leaf on a bad bunch. The best-known brand is the Drawmaster. Some factories test every cigar, some test samples, and some rely on their rollers' feel instead. Habanos S.A. says a suction draw test has been used in Cuban factories since the end of 2001.
