The official packing is part of the folklore: cellophane printed with a stork and the old It’s a Girl / It’s a Boy announcement. That is factory tradition, not a flavor. The cigar itself is the short, slightly spicy everyday breva of a four-generation Dominican factory that still says it will not rush the hands of time.

The Curly Head is the long, slim six-and-a-half by forty-three of Fuente’s affordable line. Officially it wears a Connecticut shade wrapper and is aimed at a creamy, smooth sitting rather than a Gran Reserva Cameroon session. Length is lancero-ish; the roll is the sandwich-style work the house has used on this size for decades.

Fuente has sold this cigar to budget-minded enthusiasts for a long time without pretending it is a Don Carlos. Dominican tobacco, Connecticut shade, creamy and smooth on the company’s own page. It is the entry lancero of Tabacalera A. Fuente, not the flagship, and it is built to smoke like a Fuente at a weekday price.

The Curly Head Deluxe Natural is the same six-and-a-half by forty-three lancero, finished as the Deluxe: Connecticut shade over Dominican tobacco, packed in twenty-fives. Fuente’s own line copy calls the smoke creamy and smooth and does not dress it in Gran Reserva language. Mild to medium, shade-grown cover, long and thin.

Where the Hemingway Perfecto is a 1980s revival of a hard Cuban shape, this is the opposite idea — a straight lancero at an everyday price. The factory is still Tabacalera A. Fuente in the Dominican Republic. Shade wrapper, creamy register, six and a half inches of the house’s older, cheaper work.

The Curly Head Deluxe Maduro keeps the six-and-a-half by forty-three lancero of the Deluxe and dresses it in a darker maduro cover. The line is Fuente’s long-running affordable size, Dominican, packed in twenty-fives. Named notes on this dark Deluxe are a nutty core and a little spice, on a medium body.

Official Deluxe copy is written around Connecticut shade; this maduro is the fermented-cover version of that same lancero. It is not a ten-year Don Carlos and not a cedar-sleeved Chateau. It is the dark, nutty, slightly spicy weekday lancero from Tabacalera A. Fuente.

The Especiales Emperador is a seven-inch by fifty-two from Fuente’s medium-filler Especiales line. The company says these cigars use a different rolling technique because the filler is medium length, not the long-leaf Gran Reserva method. Under a reddish-brown Ecuador Habano wrapper sit aged Dominican tobaccos. Body is medium.

Named tasting notes from the official page are cedar, oak, a little spice, and a delicate sweetness. That is the whole flavor list the house printed. The Emperador is the long Churchill of that Habano-wrapped Especiales set — a casual afternoon size, Dominican, medium, and built on oak and cedar rather than Cameroon sweetness.
