Seasoning a humidor

Wiki · Terms · Seasoning a humidor

New Spanish cedar is thirsty. Seasoning means raising the wood’s moisture so the box will hold relative humidity instead of stealing it from the first cigars you put inside. Typical practice: wipe or place distilled water (not tap, and not a soaked interior that warps the joints), close the box, wait days, watch the hygrometer, repeat until the number stays in your working range.

There is more than one school — sponge, shot glass, humidity packs charged for seasoning. The shared idea is patience. Loading a dry box and hoping is how wrappers crack.

Once seasoned, the humidor still needs a source of moisture. Seasoning is the once-at-the-start job, not the whole climate system. Full note: topics · humidor.
