San Andrés tobacco is grown in the San Andrés Tuxtla valley in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. The best-known type, often called San Andrés negro, is grown in full sun and cures to a very dark brown.
Cigar makers in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and elsewhere buy it mainly for maduro wrappers, and sometimes use it as binder. Along with Connecticut broadleaf, it is one of the two most common maduro wrapper leaves.
"San Andrés" names where the leaf was grown. A cigar with a San Andrés wrapper can be rolled in another country. See wrapper types and colors.
