Plasencia is the name of a tobacco-growing and cigar-making family that has worked in tobacco since 1865, first in Cuba. After the 1959 revolution the family left Cuba and started again in Central America. Under Néstor Plasencia it became one of the largest tobacco growers in Nicaragua and Honduras. His son, Néstor Andrés Plasencia, now leads the business.
For most of its history the family grew tobacco and made cigars for other companies, not under its own name. Its factories in Estelí, Nicaragua, and its Tabacos de Oriente factory in Danlí, Honduras, have made cigars for many well-known brands. Since 2014 Plasencia has made the all-Nicaraguan Montecristo Espada for Altadis U.S.A., and in 2026 it took on more Altadis production after U.S. sanctions closed Altadis’s Dominican supply for several months.
The family launched its own brand in 2016 and 2017. Lines include Alma Fuerte, Alma del Campo, Alma del Fuego, Reserva Original, Cosecha 146, and Plasencia 1865. Many are Nicaraguan puros made with tobacco from the family’s own farms, and they range from medium to full in strength.
Plasencia is filed here under Nicaragua, where most of its cigars are made, and is also listed under Honduras.
