Wiki · Brands · Hoyo de Monterrey (Honduran)
Hoyo de Monterrey (Honduran) is the U.S.-market Hoyo de Monterrey. It is a different cigar from the Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey and has no Cuban tobacco. It is made by General Cigar Co., part of Scandinavian Tobacco Group, at the Honduran American Tobacco S.A. (HATSA) factory in Danlí, Honduras.
After the 1959 revolution the U.S. rights to the name passed to Villazón & Co. of Tampa, which began making Hoyo de Monterrey in Honduras in the 1960s. General Cigar bought Villazón, with Hoyo and Punch, in 1997.
The best-known line is Excalibur, sold in Europe under the name Excalibur alone. Other lines include Dark Sumatra and Reposado. In 2024 and 2025 General Cigar replaced the core line with three new blends, Rojo, Oscuro, and Shade, all made at HATSA. The Shade uses only Honduran tobacco. A new Le Hoyo was added in 2026. Most of these cigars are medium to full in strength, much stronger than the Cuban Hoyo, one of the mildest Cuban brands.
The museum bands below are all U.S.-market bands, including Excalibur, Dark Sumatra, and Reposado.
