Diplomáticos

Diplomáticos is a Cuban cigar brand sold around the world by Habanos S.A. It was created in 1966 and was the first new Cuban brand after the 1959 revolution to go on public sale. It was based on Montecristo. Like Montecristo, it names its sizes with numbers instead of names, and the first five sizes matched the Montecristo No. 1 to No. 5. It was meant to sell for a little less than Montecristo, mainly in France.

Today the regular range is small, and the Diplomáticos No. 2, a pyramid, is the best-known size. The brand is also used for many regional editions made for single countries. The leaf comes from the Vuelta Abajo region of Pinar del Río. Habanos rates the brand medium to full in strength.

Diplomáticos shows how the Cuban industry built new brands after the revolution, using an existing house blend and size list as a starting point. Cuban Diplomáticos cigars cannot legally be sold in the United States because of the U.S. embargo.
