Wiki · Brands · Cohiba (Dominican)
Cohiba (Dominican) is the U.S.-market Cohiba. It is a different cigar from the Cuban Cohiba and has no Cuban tobacco. General Cigar Co. first sold a Cohiba in 1978 and launched the current cigar in 1997. Most are made in Santiago, Dominican Republic. The band has a red dot in the “O” of COHIBA. Lines include Red Dot, Black, Riviera, and Nicaragua. Cubatabaco, Cuba’s state tobacco company, has challenged the U.S. trademark since 1997. The Second Circuit ruled against it in 2005, citing the embargo. A trademark board cancelled General Cigar’s registrations in 2022, and a court upheld that in 2025. General Cigar’s appeal was still pending as of October 2026. Full timeline: Cohiba vs. Cohiba.

Special Release Cohibas

Besides its regular lines, General Cigar has made several limited Cohibas. Most are made at its factory in the Dominican Republic, General Cigar Dominicana. The most expensive is the Cohiba Spectre. The first Spectre came out in November 2018, limited to 180 boxes of 10 cigars. Later versions followed in 2019 (180 boxes), 2021 (500 boxes), 2022 (600 boxes, shipped in March 2023), and 2024 (shipped in June 2025, at $149.99 per cigar). Since 2021 General has also made a yearly Weller by Cohiba with the bourbon maker Sazerac. Most of those blends use some tobacco aged in barrels that held Weller bourbon.
Weller by Cohiba comes in one size each year, a 6 x 50 toro, with a new blend for each release. The 2024 version was the fourth. It is made at General Cigar Dominicana and has an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, a U.S. broadleaf binder aged in barrels that held Weller Full Proof bourbon, and filler from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Each cigar comes in its own tube, 10 tubes to a box, at $29.99 per cigar. General Cigar has not said how many were made, other than that the release is limited.
The Cohiba Silencio is made in Nicaragua at the STG Estelí factory. It started in 2018 as a private blend for Cohiba brand ambassador Sean Williams. At first it was only given out at events he attended and was not sold. It is a 6 x 50 toro with a Nicaraguan wrapper, a Cameroon binder, and filler from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. In late 2019 General sold it in stores for the first time, as a gift set of four cigars in a box that also works as an ashtray. The set cost $150 and was limited to 498 sets.
