Trinidad is a Cuban cigar brand sold around the world by Habanos S.A. It is named after the town of Trinidad on Cuba’s south coast, founded in the 1500s and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Habanos dates the brand to 1969. Like Cohiba, for many years it was not sold and was used only as a gift for foreign diplomats.
Trinidad went on general sale in 1998, in small quantities and in one size, the Fundadores, a long, thin cigar. The Reyes, Coloniales, and Robustos Extra were added in 2003, the Robusto T in 2009, and the Esmeralda, Media Luna, and Topes in 2019. For several years Trinidad was made at El Laguito, the Cohiba factory in Havana. Today it is made in the city of Pinar del Río. The leaf comes from the Vuelta Abajo region. Habanos rates the brand medium in strength.
Because of the U.S. embargo, Cuban Trinidad cigars cannot legally be sold in the United States. A separate non-Cuban Trinidad, with no Cuban tobacco, is sold in the United States by Altadis U.S.A., part of Tabacalera USA. Its lines have been made in the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. Trinidad was created after the 1959 revolution, so, as with Cohiba, no pre-revolution owner had ever held the name.
